What is a Fried Donut and How Does it Differ from a Baked Donut?
A fried donut is a type of donut that is fried in oil instead of being baked. Fried donuts are denser and have a chewier texture than regular donuts. They are also sweeter and have a richer flavor. They are also generally covered in a sugar or glaze coating, which helps to seal in the flavor and moisture. Fried donuts are most commonly found in the southern United States, where they are often called “southern fried donuts.” They are also popular in Latin America and the Caribbean, where they are known as “buñuelos.”The most popular fried donut in the United States is the American-style donut, which is a ring-shaped donut that is fried and then coated in a sugar or glaze coating. Other popular types of fried donuts include the cream-filled cruller, the jelly-filled bomb, and the fried churro.

Fried Doughnuts Preparation
If you’re a donut lover, then you will be blown away by how much better these freshly made taste.
Because the dough is sticky and soft, it is best to make donuts with a stand mixer, but you can make the dough with your hands. If you don’t have a stand mixer, I will share with you tips and tricks to make your work easier.
In a bowl, add all-purpose flour along with a good grating of nutmeg. Nutmeg will give these fried donuts a distinct and delicious flavor. Add the powdered sugar and salt to it. Give this dry mixture a good toss to ensure that the sugar and salt are evenly distributed throughout the dough mixture.
Add warm milk to a measuring jug along with melted butter, eggs, and yeast. Mix it well. Leave it for 5 to 10 minutes so that the yeast will bloom.
Now combine wet ingredients with dry ones in the bowl of a stand mixer slowly. Make the dough on high for 3 minutes, and if you are making the dough by hand, then you can either use a spatula or wooden spoon to mix. You can also use a handheld electric mixer if you have to make dough.
You will see that the dough will be quite sticky and soft. If you want to add flour at the most, you can add an additional one or two tablespoons of flour but remember that this is the texture that you want the dough to have so that when it is fried, it will become crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
If you’re making it by hand, brush the board with a half tablespoon of oil to keep the dough from sticking. Start kneading the dough; this will take 10 to 15 minutes. At last, the dough will be elastic and soft. Eventually it will become sticky; at that point, you can use a bench scraper to avoid sticking.
Take a bowl and grease it with oil. After kneading the dough with your hands or with a stand mixer, transfer it to a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel for one and a half to two hours. Leave it to rise and double in size.
After one and a half hours, take the dough out of the bowl. At this point, you can use flour on the surface for rolling.
Flour the top of the dough and press it down so that air bubbles will come out.
Roll the dough to about a half-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter to cut donuts. If you don’t have a donut cutter, you can cut it with a circle cutter or any round object. To cut in the middle, use a pipping bag pin to cut the middle circle.
Let these rise for 20 to 30 minutes on parchment paper. Cutting the parchment paper and adding the donuts to the oil with it is one of the best ways to maneuver the donuts into the oil without deflating or losing their shape.
The best temperature for frying donuts is around 160 °C, which will result in even browning and super soft donuts. If you don’t have a thermometer, just make sure that your donuts are bubbling gently.
Cook them on both sides until beautifully golden. Place these on a wire rack to cool while you make the chocolate glaze.
Chocolate Glaze Preparation
Everybody loves donuts coated with chocolate glaze. To make chocolate glaze, you need just three ingredients. Compound chocolate and butter. Melt chocolate on a double boiler or in the microwave. Add salted butter to it and mix it well. You can adjust its consistency by adding one or two tablespoons of milk.
Or if you don’t have compound chocolate, try this other recipe with cocoa powder.
In a bowl, add 3 cups of icing sugar, 8 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 4 tablespoons of fresh milk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, and mix it well.
Coat all the donuts with glaze. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or sprinkles and serve with family.
Tips & Tricks to Ensure the Best Results When Making Fried Donuts with Chocolate Glaze
Here are a few tips and tricks to help you make the perfect batch of fried donuts with chocolate glaze every time:
- Start by making sure your oil is at the right temperature. If it’s too hot, your donuts will be too greasy. If it’s not hot enough, they won’t be cooked through.
- Knead the dough properly until it become soft and elastic.
- it’s important to choose the right type of chocolate for your glaze. We recommend using a dark chocolate, as it will provide a richer flavor.
- You’ll also need to make sure that the chocolate is at the correct temperature – too cold and it will be difficult to work with, too hot and it will thin out and be difficult to apply to the donuts.
- Next, you’ll need to fry the donuts to perfection. The key here is to not over-fry them, as this will make them tough and difficult to eat.
